Miesha and the Spanks explore motherhood, heritage, birth and death on Unconditional Love in Hi Fi yyc
Unconditional Love in Hi-Fi is Miesha and the Spanks’ follow-up to 2021’s EP Singles and their first on iconic Vancouver indie label Mint Records, the one-time Canadian home of artists such as Neko Case and the New Pornographers. Louie’s musical partner has been drummer Sean Hamilton since the duo’s 2016 EP The Stranger. The latest release, which came out earlier this week, was recorded in three studios on two continents.
Unconditional Love opens with a snippet from the translation of Pope Francis’s official apology to Indigenous people for the harm caused by residential schools that he gave at the Ermineskin Cree Nation cemetery in Maskwacis last July. It’s a lead-in to the fiery opening track Dig Me Out, which Louie began writing after media began reporting in May 2021 on the discovery of unmarked graves and the remains of 215 children buried around the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Not all the songs are as dark. The empowering “the-girls-are-OK” anthem Grlsrok was inspired by Louie’s years as an instructor at Girls Rock Camp in Calgary and begins with a young attendee’s interview at CJSW, where she talks about her experiences playing in a band at the camp. Meanwhile, the wry Mom Jeans/Mom Genes explores motherhood and post-pregnancy body image.
The intro to that song features cameos by Louie’s twins, Arthur and Otis, as they “cry for their mama.” Louie wanted to include them but knew they wouldn’t perform on demand. So she locked herself in the washroom and “they both came knocking on the door and screaming.”
