ICYMI: Middleton, N.S. native chronicles local connections with First and Second World Wars in two books | SaltWire

Hankinson LeGard, 85, grew up in Middleton. Her favourite subject in school was history and she always had an interest in the military.“I saw this young lady walking down the street in uniform and she looked so fabulous,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘I’m going to join someday’ and I did. And I really enjoyed my time in the military.”Remembrance Day gives us opportunity to pause and remember the gallant service and sacrifice made by those men and women who served our country.

“Every year, I go to Remembrance Day and know nothing about these people,” she said. “Although I don’t come from a military family, I’ve always felt that those who served should be remembered somehow. People should know about them.”During the Second World War, Greenwood was a Commonwealth training base for airmen from Canada, the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand.

“I felt that it was important to convey to the younger generation and other residents of the local district, exactly what happened on their doorstep during .” Graeme Wright, a resident of Pleasantville, Lunenburg County, who she described as having an “extensive knowledge” of both world wars, assisted with the research, provided guidance and input to Hankinson LeGard as she wrote the book and then edited it before it was published.
