Mid-size firms are offering salaries 10 per cent higher than the big four, increasing bonuses and speeding up promotions.

The chairman of national firm Nexia, Mal Di Giulio, said: “The struggle continues to be defending against the big four firms, so we have moved towards ensuring our staff are paid above or in line with the market rate, and are listening to the requests of staff in relation to more casual attire and work flexibility.“We also offer sign-on payments, study completion retention bonuses, competitive maternity leave policy, career management and coaching.

“To ward off poaching we try to match pay and sometimes pay more, focus on culture and training and development,” she said, with pay rises “the main incentive to hire and retain staff”.being lured by the top end of town helped smaller firms retain them, Marsh Tincknell chief executive Randall Corless warned that any pay rises needed to be in line with other employees to stop them jumping ship.
