Terms like “delusional,” “dangerous,” “combative,” “evil,” “fringe,” “horrible” and “divisive” are but a small sampling of the social media comments associated with her victory. No, it’s not federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. While he certainly had to deal with the insufferable ramblings of the lunatic left-leaning fringe , that’s not who I initially thought of. Think about it. The fear and paranoia that accompanied Ford into the Pink Palace in 2018 was unlike just about anything we had ever seen in this country. People who remembered the trials and tribulations with his late brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, worried that the circus-like atmosphere would be replicated on a provincial scale. They attacked the current premier’s background, childhood, family, education, business, friends, associates and so much more.
Here’s the other thing that started to happen: perceptions about Ford began to change. His first term evolved from a somewhat combative position, including the battle to reduce the number of seats at Toronto City Hall from 47 to 25, into a more focused, intelligent and congenial leadership during the height of COVID-19. Ford was seen in a completely different light.
