Smith has the necessary qualities to become a top\u002Dflight premier, defeat Notley\u0027s NDP and become an important anchor for conservatism and libertarianism in…
National Post deputy comment editor Jesse Kline is concerned about the once-promising “libertarian politician,” who seemed like the “presumptive premier” 10 years ago. “As her resume reveals,” he wrote on Wednesday, “practically everything Smith touches goes south, and her political machinations have had wide-ranging consequences for the province.” Moreover, he’s concerned her victory “could be a boon for Rachel Notley, and bad for Alberta” .
She’s also worked hard to maintain existing political bridges with friends and allies, and build new bridges with those who differ with her on economic and social issues. This is a true representation of intellectual discourse: speak to one another, learn from each other and respectfully agree to disagree if need be. Much like democracy, it can be imperfect and occasionally messy, but it’s the right thing to do if you truly cherish freedom of speech, thought and choice.
Being afraid to make the simplest move because it could potentially lead to vitriolic comments and social media posts isn’t healthy for a democracy. Society’s inability to move past tribalistic instincts and echo chambers, and accept that differences of opinion are normal and don’t inherently lead to radical, revolutionary or totalitarian thought, hasn’t been helpful, either.
Smith told the CBC that her version of the act would “empower the Alberta legislature to refuse enforcement of any specific federal government law or policy that violates Alberta’s provincial rights under Sec. 92 of the Constitution or the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” It would only be invoked after a free vote of all Alberta MLAs. What’s wrong with this proposal, exactly?
