Chief Mi'sel Joe of the Miawpukek First Nation. File photoMemorial ride honours veterans and support PTSD sufferers | SaltWireChief Mi’sel Joe says Miawpukek First Nation did not request federal oversight of a massive wind-to-hydrogen project on the west coast of Newfoundland, and that a document to that effect was submitted by a band official who had no authorization to do so.
Joe spoke to The Telegram Tuesday, Sept. 5, after The Telegram published details of the file found on the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s website last week. The seven-page letter is signed by MFN natural resources director Ross Hinks, and states it was submitted on behalf of the band.“That wasn’t authorized by us. That was done by one of our employees on their own,” Joe said, referring to Hinks.
Project Nujio’Qonik has been endorsed by local band and council leaders in the area, including three Qalipu First Nation bands, but a citizens group on the Port au Port Peninsua says the scale and impact of the development would threaten local ecosystems and their way of life.
“We’ve dealt with the province on this one, and as far as we’re concerned they’re doing what we asked them to do,” he said. That leaves the IAAC with one formal request for an impact assessment request of Project Nujio’Qonic, that of the Environmental Transparency Committee on the peninsula submitted in April 2023.Public responses to World Energy’s 4,200-page environmental impact statement must be submitted by mid-October.
