Things are gradually reopening as the last of a Valentine’s Day blast moves out, leaving about 40 cm of fresh snow on the Avalon, 35 cm on the Burin Peninsula and 25 cm in central Newfoundland.
High winds resulted in drifting and reduced visibility in some areas with vehicles becoming stuck and at least one highway—the Witless Bay Line—being closed. Driving conditions have improved considerably since early this morning, allowing transportation services such as Metrobus to get back on the road. Memorial University and Marine Institute reopen at 1:00. However, all schools under the English School District in metro will remain closed for the day.
Meanwhile, the City of St. John’s is going to outline its plans regarding cleanup and provide information on all the impacts of the storm on things such as garbage collection and recycling. There is a news conference at the depot on Blackler Avenue early this afternoon. VOCM News will be there. All classes and activities at the St. John's, Marine Institute and Signal Hill campuses will resume at 1 p.m. The Childcare Centre will open and employees should report for work at that time.
