Metro Cebu has been struck by multiple devastating fires over the past two days, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement. Over 100 families have lost their homes, and an estimated P13 million in damages has been reported.

Metro Cebu has been ravaged by a series of devastating fires over the past two days, leaving an estimated damage of over P13 million and displacing 141 families. Over 100 families have been left homeless due to the rapid spread of the fires and are currently being sheltered in various evacuation centers within their respective barangays.

Tragically, a 62-year-old woman, Norma Fomoyaso, who suffered burns while her house in Sitio Pokang, Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, caught fire, is reported to have died at 2:00 AM. Her death is believed to be a result of complications from her injuries.The first fire broke out on January 23, 2025, at The Furniture City, which housed two adjacent warehouses and showrooms on Hernan Cortes Street, Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City. The blaze consumed a 2,000-square-meter warehouse owned by Osbert Ong, resulting in an estimated damage of P10 million. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. The next day, on January 24, another fire erupted in Sitio Sangi, Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, at 1:28 PM. This fire destroyed 41 houses, causing an estimated damage of P648,000. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) believes the fire originated from children playing with fire in the second floor of a house owned by a certain Wilmer Ching. A total of 59 families, comprising 275 individuals, were left homeless and are currently being accommodated at the Pusok Gym managed by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO). The gym has been equipped with foldable tents and a receiving area to house the victims.At 5:20 PM on Friday, January 24, another fire broke out in Sitio Pokang, Barangay Looc, and Purok Orchids in Opao, Mandaue City. The fire reached the fourth alarm at around 6:00 PM and was finally extinguished at 7:33 PM. An estimated 100 houses were destroyed, resulting in P3.25 million in damages. The affected residents were transferred to evacuation centers, and the Mandaue City Social Welfare Services (CSWS) provided food, water, and other essential supplies. The CSWS also began profiling the victims to ensure a swift and efficient distribution of aid.Another fire occurred in Barangay Tabok, Mandaue City, late last night. At 8:15 PM, firefighters declared the blaze under control, and no significant damage was reported. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) emphasized the importance of fire safety measures to prevent further loss of life. The BFP recommends several precautionary measures, including unplugging unused appliances, avoiding overloaded outlets, keeping matches and lighters away from children, and ensuring stoves and electrical connections are safe before leaving the house
