Meta's decision to replace professional fact-checkers with crowd-sourced moderation on Facebook and Instagram has raised fears of increased misinformation similar to what's seen on X (formerly Twitter).
Meta 's decision to replace professional US fact-checkers with crowd-sourced moderation has sparked concerns that Facebook and Instagram could become breeding grounds for misinformation similar to Elon Musk 's X, according to researchers.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday that the tech giant was ending its third-party fact-checking program in the United States and handing the responsibility of debunking falsehoods to regular users through a system called 'Community Notes,' popularized by X. This move follows years of criticism from supporters of then-President-elect Donald Trump, among others, who alleged that conservative voices were being censored under the guise of combating misinformation, a claim vehemently refuted by professional fact-checkers. Zuckerberg acknowledged in the announcement, which also included plans to reduce content moderation and 'restore free expression' on its platforms, that the policy shift meant 'we're going to catch less bad stuff.' Abandoning formal fact-checking for crowd-sourced tools like Community Notes has proven unsuccessful for platforms in the past, Nora Benavidez, senior counsel at the nonprofit watchdog Free Press, told AFP. 'Twitter tried it and couldn't withstand the volume of misinformation and other violent, harmful content,' she added. After acquiring Twitter in 2022, rebranded as X, Musk significantly downsized trust and safety teams and implemented Community Notes, a crowd-sourced moderation tool promoted by the platform as a way for users to provide context to posts. Researchers argue that the relaxed moderation on X, coupled with the reinstatement of previously banned accounts known for spreading misinformation, has transformed the platform into a haven for false information. While studies have demonstrated that Community Notes can be effective in dispelling certain falsehoods, such as vaccine misinformation, researchers caution that it is most successful for topics with widespread agreement
