Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is pulling back on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives following a US Supreme Court decision outlawing affirmative action in college admissions.

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This move follows a trend among US companies, spurred by a July 2023 US Supreme Court decision that banned affirmative action in college admissions.Conservative activists have been pressuring companies both legally and on social media to adopt a similar approach in the workplace.

They target DEI programs, including diversity initiatives and hiring practices that favor historically marginalized groups, as well as those focused on gender identity and sexual orientation.DEI policies aim to counteract discriminatory practices. Critics argue that programs that single out participants based on race, gender, or sexual orientation are unfair and that equal opportunities should be available to all.Joel Kaplan, Meta's newly appointed global policy chief, told Fox News Digital on Friday that the change will ensure the company is 'building teams with the most talented people' instead of making hiring decisions based on protected characteristics. 'This is ultimately about doing what's best for our company and ensuring that we are serving everyone and building teams with the most talented people,' Kaplan said. 'This means evaluating people as individuals and sourcing people from a range of candidate pools, but never making hiring decisions based on protected characteristics like race or gender.'Several other companies have also scaled back their DEI efforts. McDonald's, for example, announced earlier this month that it would end some diversity practices, citing the Supreme Court decision. The company will retire specific goals for diversity at senior leadership levels and end a program that encourages suppliers to develop diversity training and increase minority representation within their leadership ranks. McDonald's also said it would pause 'external surveys,' though it did not elaborate. Walmart confirmed in November that it would not renew a five-year commitment to an equity racial center set up in 2020 and would stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index. The company also stated it would better monitor its third-party marketplace to ensure that items sold there do not include products aimed at LGBTQ+ minors, including chest binders intended for transgender youth. Additionally, Walmart will no longer consider race and gender as factors in awarding supplier contracts or determining financing eligibility for grants.Ford CEO Jim Farley sent a memo to employees in August outlining changes to the company's DEI policies, including a decision to stop participating in the HRC's Corporate Equality Index. Ford has been reviewing its policies for a year and stated that it does not use hiring quotas or tie compensation to diversity goals, but remains committed to 'fostering a safe and inclusive workplace.' 'We will continue to put our effort and resources into taking care of our customers, our team, and our communities versus publicly commenting on the many polarizing issues of the day,' the memo said.
