Half an hour passed by, then an hour, and Daniel Andrews was still nowhere to be seen, as he waited for the factional wheeling and dealing to be done before he would join his colleagues.A frenetic press pack pounced at any sign of movement from behind the big brown doors, even when politicians took a quick respite from the intense negotiations with a toilet break.
Several MPs who had confidently told cameras outside parliament that morning "Jacinta Allan will be the next premier of Victoria" were shocked and frankly embarrassed at what they described as a "treacherous betrayal" from Mr Carroll. A fired-up Mr Andrews told his group he didn't want to be like the Liberal Party, the party he's previously described as a "rabble" and that its leader "couldn't run a bath", according to MPs inside the meeting.Daniel Andrews brought his party into line one last time after entering the Labor Caucus room.
That's when a compromise was reached, Ben Carroll backed down and accepted the deputy premier position and a vote was avoided.While Mr Carroll and the right faction have been accused of using the nomination as a bargaining chip to secure the deputy post, the move proved an unstable start for a post-Andrews government.
