WE were raised as children at 79 Luna Street, Tuguegarao. At that time, it was far from being a city. Tuguegarao was simple. Life was simple. People were simple, and we were raised simply.

Our parents saw to it that we had enough, and they made us realize that money is not picked from trees and that it comes only to those who are willing to work. We were fortunate to grow up with our grandparents.There is something about grandparents that cannot come from others, not even from one's parents.

We polished the floor with coconut husks that will be as foreign to youngsters today as a space probe. We wiped furniture with rags. At school, we did the same: clean the classroom and that included husking the floor, sweeping and polishing it. We could not afford to buy floor wax, and so it was very common to rub candles along the floor and thereafter polish the floor to a shine.
