Public invited to recognize missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit and gender-diverse persons during Valentine's Day event

The Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit persons is being held in Sault Ste. Marie on Valentine’s Day, bringing together Indigenous leadership and community members for a series of talks.

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker will also read a proclamation made by city council last month to set aside Feb. 14 of each year as a day to remember and honour MMIWG2S+ persons, according to a news release issued Friday. Similar MMIWG2S+ memorial marches are staged across Canada on Valentine’s Day of each year as a nod to a movement which began more than 30 years ago in Vancouver’s downtown eastside, where a march called attention to the disproportionately high numbers of missing and murdered Indigenous women in that neighbourhood.

The task force says it will look into barriers faced by local service providers in aligning their programs and services with the more than 200 calls for justice made in the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in 2019.
