Despite crippling lockdowns leading to a population decrease in Melbourne, the Victorian capital is set to overtake Sydney as the nation’s biggest city in a decade.

, which will be released on Friday, shows Melbourne will overtake the Harbour City by 2031-32 with a population of six million, up from the current figure of five million.

Picture: Getty Almost 80,000 people left Melbourne during the first year of the pandemic, largely attributed to overseas migration as lockdowns hampered travel. Mostly lockdown-free, it welcomed a 0.8 per cent increase to its population, growing to 5.2 million. Forecasts in the statement show that figure is expected to grow by another million by 2032-33.

The Population Statement will also reveal the nation is experiencing a boom in fertility rates post COVID-19.
