Melbourne shoppers spent more than in December than the same time in 2019 despite overall traffic still being down in a sign the city is roaring back to life.

New data from the City of Melbourne shows that while foot traffic is still slightly down on pre-pandemic levels, people are spending more than they did before COVID-19.

Matt Thomas, who runs the Lonsdale Street venue HER, said a positive summer period had shown Melburnians still had a strong desire to dine out and be entertained.The Australian Financial Review“It’s both exciting and reassuring that we haven’t lost our affinity for hospitality over the past few years, and as the data reflects, it’s an industry that’s absolutely solidified itself as part of the fabric of our daily lives.

Meanwhile, the weekends have enjoyed greater foot traffic and spending, with a daily average spend of $30.18 million in December 2022, up from $26.25 million for the same time in 2019.Spending on Saturdays from October to December 2022 rose to an average $35.83 million, a 20 per cent increase on 2019, while Sundays increased 11 per cent.
