Melbourne is hopeful star defender Steven May will only miss one match despite suffering multiple broken ribs in the Demons’ win over Hawthorn on Saturday. May was taken to hospital after being crunched in a marking contest with towering Hawk Mabior Chol. The two-time All-Australian was left in a bad way after copping the full brunt of Chol’s knee to his ribs. He was taken to the bench where he struggled to catch his breath before being subbed out and taken to hospital.
“At this stage, Steven will miss this week’s match against Port Adelaide. We will continue to monitor his pain and function following that, in the lead up to our Round 4 game.” Fellow defender Jake Lever also failed to finish Saturday’s match after suffering a knee injury. But he has avoided serious damage and remains a strong chance to line up against the Power this week. “Pleasingly, Jake has been cleared of major injury to his right knee.
