Restaurateurs from the top end of Melbourne's CBD are fighting the Andrews government amid rumours of an injecting room opening in the heart of the popular theatre and dining district.

An open letter signed by 40 distressed traders has urged Premier Daniel Andrews to reconsider as the Salvation Army building on Bourke Street is allegedly being floated as a potential site.

The letter, obtained by 3AW, outlines safety as a primary concern for patrons, workers, tourists and families visiting the popular area. The plea is signed by the operators of high profile bars and restaurants including Siglo and the European, Pellegrinis, Longrain, Punch Lane wine Bar & Restaurant. “It’s well documented that the amenity does suffer, there’s an increase in inappropriate behaviour …crime, violence and making the area unsafe, and that is our main concern,” she said.
