Melbourne Cup could be smashed by heavy rain, thunderstorms as wet weather system heads west

If thunderstorms are nearby just ahead of the 3pm race – or any other race for that matter – stewards could decide to delay the running of the race for safety reasons. Having said that, the chance of a thunderstorm at the track is about 40 per cent, with a slightly higher chance the entire event will go off without a hitch.
