The news that Archie and Lilibet have formally received the titles of Prince and Princess has reignited debate over controversial comments Meghan Markle made in the Sussexes’ Oprah Winfrey interview.
During their March 2021 on-air interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle inferred the decision not to give Archie a royal title at birth was linked to his race.
Markle replied: “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title. As Archie and Lilibet were the great-grandchildren of the Monarch at the time of their birth they were not entitled to royal titles.
Despite failing to mention the 1917 law when making the controversial comments to Winfrey, the Duke and Duchess directly acknowledged the same rule in their latest statement. As part of their decision to “step back” from the royal family in January 2020, Harry and Meghan agreed to no longer use their HRH titles but can still call themselves the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
