PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian construction sector, a key harbinger of economic growth, has borne the brunt of weak business sentiment and lack of building jobs in the market.
The sector took a turn for the worse this year, with the value of construction work done every quarter merely expanding at a rate below 1%. As a result, in 2018, Bursa Malaysia’s Construction Index posted the worst decline since the 2008 global economic crisis as investors began to dump shares in listed construction counters.
According to UOBKayHian Malaysia Research analyst Farhan Ridzwan, several of the long-awaited rollout of mega projects would materialise in the first half of 2020 for the government to sustain the country’s economic growth.“Mega-infrastructure projects that are expected to kick off soon include the ECRL and potentially Pan Borneo Highway Sabah .
