A Local Culinary Adventure: inspired by Halifax's Seaport Market | SaltWire #cooking #cookingtipsCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — At 93, Sister Teresa Currie isn't planning to hang up her volunteer hat anytime soon.

“I can’t sit home sitting down in the rocking chair. I mean, I thank God every day for my health. I have good health. I don't take any pills.” Then from 1970 to 1975, she embarked on a five-year missionary journey in the Dominican Republic working with disadvantaged youth and their families. Seeing the harsh penal system there, Currie said the experience further ignited her passion for this work.

In 1975, she started her prison ministry in the Queen’s County Jail and Sleepy Hollow Jail. By 1982, she became a full-time chaplain at Springhill Institutional prison, a role she held until her retirement in 1996.“I'm proud today of some of them, especially the lifers. I mean, one guy now that we helped – our congregation helped – he's got his PhD today. And there's about five or six or seven of them that … have done very well,” said Currie, who is a member of the Sisters of St.
