A rapid antigen test that diagnoses four diseases at once – COVID, RSV and two types of flu – could be on the way.
A rapid antigen test could be on the way that diagnoses four diseases at once: COVID, respiratory syncytial virus and two types of the flu, with Australia’s medicines regulator considering a number of applications for the combined home testing kit.
“It’s going to be a really, really valuable tool in Australia to provide right advice and the right treatment to patients.”Australian Medical Association vice president Dr Danielle McMullen said the four-in-one rapid tests would be most useful for older or vulnerable Australians, who could use the results to access antivirals for COVID and influenza.
Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has already approved rapid antigen home tests that detect influenza A, influenza B and COVID-19 in a single-test format, a spokeswoman said.It is not yet clear how much the rapid tests would cost if they were to be supplied to the Australian market, though one European supplier was selling a four-in-one swab test for about $10.
