Dr Zahnow said fears of young people on social media were amplified and legitimised by traditional media in a feedback loop. "Sensationalist reporting may sell papers, but it's not appropriate for bringing communities together," Dr Zahnow said."If we take a punitive approach now, the evidence demonstrates that we will need to continue paying for them for the rest of their lives."Dr Zahnow has been analysing community Facebook pages, where young people are being named, shamed and doxxed — when private or identifying information is published about a person — for supposed crimes.

He said it was a counter-productive narrative that only served to marginalise vulnerable children even further and make them more likely to offend."What we're seeing with the 'crime crisis' in Queensland is this has become real in the public imagination, even if the statistics tell us crime rates are on the decline," he said.
