Securing pole is vital on the tight 4.94km street circuit - nine of the 14 races here have been won from pole.

SINGAPORE – McLaren’s title-chasing Lando Norris will get a chance to cut Red Bull’s Max Verstappen’s lead further in the drivers’ championship race after the Briton secured pole position at the Marina Bay Circuit on Sept 21 ahead of the Dutchman.

Securing pole is vital on the tight 4.94km street circuit, where overtaking is notoriously tricky; historically, nine of the 14 races here have been won from pole. In 2023, Carlos Sainz’s pole position translated into a victory here. Defending champion Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship with 313 points, with McLaren’s Lando Norris just 59 points behind while Leclerc is in third just 19 points adrift of Norris.

All eyes will be on Norris on Sept 22 to see if he can improve on his second-place finish here in 2023 – McLaren’s first podium here since Jenson Button in 2012 – by converting pole into a crucial victory which will put himself well within Verstappen’s reach.
