Needless to say, the now-22-year-old Melburnian has more than succeeded, winning FIA Rookie of the Year for his 2023 season. So who better to take us on a lap of Albert Park? “I’ll do my best,” he says with a laugh. “The left-hander has a lot of grandstands around it, so it’s quite a cool atmosphere there, but four is a frustrating corner, a bit of an awkward one, always very ‘understeery’. Trying to get the front end to grip through there is a bit tricky. Turn five is flat out in a qualifying lap, and the wall’s quite close, so you don’t want to get it wrong.“The biggest G-force is the next right-hander, six. They re-profiled that a couple of years ago and it’s now a very, very quick corner.

“They are probably the most exciting corners on the whole track – very, very tricky to get right. You’re turning in, in eighth gear downshifting to seventh. It’s one of the quickest corners of the whole year, to be honest, and the right-hander of that chicane, the curve and apex point is very sharp. So you’ve got to be incredibly precise.“On the exit of that one, you’ve got a very aggressive exit curb, which will destroy the floor, so you’ve got to stay off that one.
