The thing the PGA Tour loved to say out loud, that the Players had golf’s strongest field was no longer true. With LIV Golf up and running, 25 or 30 of last year’s top 100 ranked players — including defending champion Cam Smith — weren’t in the field. Although asEwan Murray asked on social media Thursday: Can you even be defending champion if you’re not allowed to defend? Fine question, but not one the PGA Tour brass in Ponte Vedra hoped to be entertaining at their biggest tournament.
“There is no doubt that we’ve essentially created a bunch of Players Championships, if you will, for these big events,” Mackenzie Hughes told me before heading to TPC Sawgrass. “It will feel a little bit diminished even if that wasn’t the intent.” With early week news drops, hall of fame inductions, commissioner Jay Monahan’s annual state of the union and endless hype, the Players is morphing into baseball’s winter meetings, football’s hall-of-fame game, and the Super Bowl wrapped into one product.
