On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Minister of Eduction Stephen Lecce both called on OCDSB to reverse the policy.
Under the SROs program, which had lasted for about 20 years, police officers were assigned to build relationships with schools across the city. The OCDSB decided to cancel the program after a lengthy report from the board’s Office of the Human Rights and Equity Advisor was tabled. Some students, especially those from minority groups, felt frightened and threatened by the presence of police officers at school, the report concluded.
On Friday, trustee Donna Blackburn said she will introduce a notice of motion at the next board meeting on Tuesday night asking her fellow trustees to request that board staff negotiate a “proactive, positive relationship” with police to deal with matters in schools that are concerning, but not criminal in nature.Article content
There are already a number of very weighty items on the OCDSB agenda in the coming weeks, including passing a $1 billion budget, she said. School boards must pass their budgets by the end of June. It does not give much time to discuss this matter.
