Mayor John Tory has announced plans to increase the police budget by almost $50 million this year — a move he said was imperative to clamp down on violent crime, but which drew swift pushback from critics who argued more officers aren’t the answer.
But Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, an associate professor at the University of Toronto who studies policing, said the mayor’s plan to fight crime by giving police additional resources is simplistic, and not supported by evidence. In a statement, Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the larger budget would improve emergency response times, and “reflects the critical need” to hire more staff “to increase operational capacity, and in turn public safety.”
The mayor said the police do need to reform, and Toronto police and the police services board are making efforts “every single day to rebuild trust” with the public.
