Parliament has rejected the Prime Minister’s EU withdrawal agreement three times while failing to settle on an alternative
British Prime Minister plans to seek an extension to the deadline for Britain’s departure from the European Union, as she reaches out to opposition politicians to help resolve the Brexit impasse.
After an eight-hour cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Ms. May emerged to announce that she wanted to find a way out of the logjam over Brexit which has seen parliament reject her EU withdrawal agreement three times while failing to settle on an alternative. “This debate, this division, cannot drag on much longer,” said said from her Downing Street office. “It is putting Members of Parliament and everyone else under immense pressure – and it is doing damage to our politics.”She also turned her back on a group within her Conservative party caucus who have been pushing for the country to leave the EU on April 12 as currently scheduled.
“Crucially, the government stands ready to abide by the decision of the House. But to make this process work, the Opposition would need to agree to this too,” she said. While Ms. May didn’t say how long she hoped to delay Brexit, she made it clear she did not want the United Kingdom to participate in elections to the European Parliament which start May 22.
