Greater Sudbury city council greenlit a $4M mausoleum expansion last week, which, despite the increased expense, is expected to fully recoup its costs
The city’s mausoleum expansion project has doubled in cost to $4 million since city council first budgeted for the project in 2021.
Despite the ballooning cost, a municipal report clarifies the project is expected to generate a net revenue and fully recover its cost by 2036, by which time all units are anticipated to be sold. There are currently 788 crypts and 1,966 niches. As of 2019, the crypt spaces were fully occupied, and the niche spots are anticipated to be sold out this year. The expansion project will include the construction of 155 crypts and 806 niches “to maximize revenue potential for the expanded facility,” with the municipal report also noting “there is significant demand for the expansion.”
