Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy has slammed the Premier for extending the controversial pandemic laws saying COVID-19 can still be managed sensibly and safely with the existing laws.
The Victorian Premier on Thursday announced the new order would come into effect from 11:59pm on Tuesday April 12 prolonging the state government’s power to enact public health measures including vaccine and mask mandates.
Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy has slammed the government for extending the pandemic laws. Picture: Jake Nowakowski The Victorian Liberal leader said National Cabinet had agreed at the start of the pandemic there would be a time when states would move on from the emergency powers. The extended pandemic laws were met with widespread criticism from Victorians with mass protests erupting across the state after the bill was passed in November last year.
"We don't want rules on any longer than they need to be. We'll continue to follow the advice to protect what we've built while protecting our community." Mr Guy also took aim at the Victorian government for failing to wind back vaccine mandates with the state’s high vaccination rate.
