As the Philippines realised, Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord can be very near unplayable. By the end of the 8-0 win she had three goals and four assists.
Caitlin Foord hasn’t really rewatched any of the World Cup. The rest of Australia has seen it on repeat, and Foord features in plenty of highlight reels.
“To be honest, not since the World Cup, no,” she says. “To be honest, since the tournament, it might sound crazy to say, but I think a lot of the girls will agree there’s still a lot of disappointment to have been so close. Yes, we made the semi-finals and finished fourth. Caitlin Foord high fives Sam Kerr. The pair scored a hat-trick each against the Philippines on Sunday.Foord scored in the 3-0 win over Swedish outfit Linkoping, but they then lost on penalties to Paris FC. It meant last year’s Champions League semi-finalists did not make the group stage this time around.
Foord and Catley – and new Arsenal signing Kyra Cooney-Cross – did at least have a week off during the last international window in mid-September, when the Matildas had no fixtures planned. Foord says it was a nice refresh before the start of the English Women’s Super League season and, of course, Australia’s Olympic qualifiers.
And as the Philippines realised on Sunday with devastating intensity, she can be very near unplayable. By the end of the 8-0 win in the Olympic qualifier at Optus Stadium, her personal card read three goals and four assists. She turns defenders, shrugs them off. Gives them the old high five, down low, too slow, and is back-heeling or dribbling or finishing before they have realised the joke is on them.
