About 130,000 customers in Quebec were still without power Saturday morning after post-tropical storm Debby hit the region, according to Hydro Quebec, with a peak of 500,000 without power Friday night
Cars drive slowly through water overflowing on to highway 40 in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue on the island of Montreal after heavy rains hit the area on Friday, August 9, 2024. Quebec is starting to recover after the remnants of Hurricane Debby pummeled several regions of the province with heavy rainfall on Friday, knocking power out and flooding roadways and basements.
The outages were “due to breakdowns caused by strong gusts of wind” and vegetation near the grid, the statement says.“We are mobilizing all available teams to restore service as quickly as possible,” Hydro Quebec said in the statement. Environment Canada figures show Montreal received 157 millimetres of rain on Friday, which broke the previous all-time daily record for rainfall set back in November 1996.
