A Filipina who was once on Indonesia's death row , Mary Jane Veloso , is celebrating her 40th birthday on Friday, January 10, in her home country but remains behind bars. Veloso, who was 25 when she left the Philippines for a domestic worker job, was arrested in Indonesia in 2010 for drug trafficking . Though she claimed her recruiters tricked her into becoming a drug mule, Indonesia convicted her and sentenced her to death.
After years of campaigning by the Philippine government and human rights groups, Indonesia granted Veloso a stay of execution. She was transferred to the Philippines in December 2024 and her case against her alleged recruiters is ongoing. Veloso's family and supporters are calling for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to grant her clemency on her birthday.
