The North\u0027s army cited the liberation of its nationals from the tyranny of foreign powers via reunification with the motherland.

marks 70 years since the Korean War was brought to its inauspicious end, and for those acquainted with current events, the dynamics then at play may feel rather familiar. In 1950, a complex, somewhat opaque, and at times frosty alliance between Russia and China led a coalition of nations opposed to the usually democratic, American-led forces of western capitalism.

Ground for the war had been laid years prior when, after the defeat of Japan in 1945, U.S. and Soviet forces divided the Korean peninsula in two. The 38th parallel separated a Sino-Soviet-backed communist regime in the North from an American-allied, capitalist one in the South and each claimed to be the sole legitimate voice of the Korean people.

Intense fighting continued for three years, mostly through a war of attrition. Soviet pilots bombarded UN positions as western bombs blanketed North Korea. In addition to eight destroyers, Canada contributed 26,791 military personnel to both combat and peacekeeping; 1,200 were injured and 516 killed.

The conflict devastated the Korean peninsula, solidified great power tensions, and killed millions of people, mostly civilians. It did nothing to resolve the greater ideological battle between the forces of communism and capitalism. While the Cold War is said to have concluded with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, today, tensions between East and West continue to rise. The war in Ukraine rages on, and Chinese rhetoric around Taiwan is becoming even more bellicose.
