“I knew we had a good run,” said McCurrach, who was surprised when he won the top day-money prize of $6,000 and that he was being summoned to the stage to talk about his big win. “They interview you right there, so it’s fresh.”
Meanwhile, McCurrach was sitting in 13th spot overall through seven nights of racing, meaning that he’ll have a tougher time climbing into one of those coveted top three spots in his ninth and final time competing in Calgary. Codey McCurrach, pictured driving during his final Cowboys Rangeland Derby, recorded the night’s fastest time on Monday.“I’m excited to see them go to certain places where I think they’re going to go,” said McCurrach, who added that he gets emotional thinking about parting ways with his horses that he and his family have loved and cared for over the years.
Like fellow driver Vern Nolin, both Sutherland and McCurrach have decided not to finish out the World Professional Chuckwagon Association season, instead opting to pursue other work opportunities in the oil and gas industry. “I’ll be on a two-week in, two-week out shift,” McCurrach explained. “I’ve been with the company for 27 years. It’s a great career. It pays a little bit more than the chuckwagons, let’s call it. They’re a great company to work for or else I wouldn’t have been there that long and I wanted to continue that career.”Article content
