Animals sent to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, a new park opening this year

Smooshi and her calf Koyuk, Marineland’s last remaining walruses, have been moved to a new facility in Abu Dhabi.

Marineland said the relocation was “part of an international effort to bring together walruses into social groups within modern specialized zoos to advance worldwide conservation, research and education efforts.” The two walruses were taken to Pearson Airport in Toronto and transferred onto a plane, which then flew to Montreal to pick up the Quebec Aquarium’s 17-year-old walrus Boris. All of the animals were then flown to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the region’s first marine park which is expected to open sometime this year.

Smooshi gave birth to Koyuk in June 2020. The father was Apollo, who died the previous year of natural causes.
