Dubbed 'one of the greatest clutch performers this country has ever produced,' Canadian women's hockey team captain Marie-Philip Poulin has been voted The Canadian Press female athlete of the year for 2022.
Canada's Marie-Philip Poulin, centre, receives the trophy after the IIHF World Championship Woman's ice hockey gold medal match between U.S. and Canada in Herning, Denmark, Sept. 4, 2022.
With quick passing and shooting hands, peerless hockey sense and a sense of occasion, Poulin has produced seven goals in her four Olympic finals, including a late equalizer and an overtime winner in Sochi, Russia in 2014. In finishing first in this year's survey of sports editors and broadcasters across the country with 22 votes out of 48, Poulin was called "the ultimate big-game player."Poulin is the second hockey player to be voted The Canadian Press female athlete of the year after Hayley Wickenheiser in 2007.
"It's that extra rep, extra mile just to maybe one day be ready when that big moment happens. That's how I've been training my whole life. That extra rep, it doesn't matter when it's going to show, or when it's going to matter, you know when those big moments happen, you're ready." "When you play with that mentality, why wouldn't you want the puck on your stick at the end of a game?"
