President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hailed the opening of the Tesla Center Philippines (TCP) in Taguig City, emphasizing its role in advancing the country's electric vehicle adoption and workforce development.
President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. welcomed the opening of the Tesla Center Philippines (TCP) in Taguig City, highlighting its potential to accelerate the country's shift towards electric vehicles and upskill its workforce. Marcos emphasized that Tesla 's entry into the Philippines signifies more than just advanced automobiles; it marks a significant step towards a greener transportation system.
He stated that the government's Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry aims to achieve a 50-percent electric vehicle market share by 2040.The 1,900-square-meter TCP, encompassing a showroom, service center, delivery center, charging station, and Tesla Motors Philippines Inc. (Tesla Philippines) headquarters, stands as a testament to the government's pro-EV policies. Marcos credited Tesla's decision to invest in the Philippines to these policies, including the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act, which eliminated excise taxes on electric vehicle batteries; the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (Evida), offering duty-free importation for charging stations, reduced user fees for EV owners, and prioritized registration and traffic privileges; and Executive Order No. 62, which lowered tariff levels on four-wheel and motorcycle EVs, both pure electric and hybrid, to zero until 2028.Tesla Regional Director Isabel Fan outlined plans to transform Metro Manila into a model city for EV adoption by developing the necessary infrastructure, particularly charging stations. Fan announced the addition of six more charging stations across Metro Manila within the next two months and plans to expand charging infrastructure nationwide, strategically located near where people live, work, and spend their time. President Marcos expressed optimism that Tesla's infrastructure investment will not only benefit the environment by reducing vehicles with internal combustion engines but also empower Filipino workers. He emphasized that each new hire represents an investment in Filipino talent, driving the transition towards sustainable technologies. Marcos further encouraged Tesla and other EV firms to consider establishing manufacturing plants in the Philippines, capitalizing on the country's growing EV industry and its production of phosphate batteries, a crucial component for EVs. He cited the inauguration of the St. Battalion (StB) Giga Factory in Tarlac last year, which is expected to produce batteries with a 300 megawatt-hour capacity annually upon operation
