President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has put on hold efforts by lawmakers to rapidly pass a bill that would raise minimum wage rates by over P100. While acknowledging the need to support workers struggling with rising living costs, Marcos emphasized the importance of careful study to assess the potential consequences for both workers and businesses.
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos on Friday applied the brakes on efforts by lawmakers to fast-track the passage of a bill which will raise the minimum wage rates by over P100.
As he signaled caution, lawmakers continued to press the Palace to certify the pending bills as urgent. With only a few months left before the end of the 19th Congress in June, members of the House of Representatives and the Senate have called on the President to certify pending bills raising minimum wage rates.
According to the latest data from the National Wages and Productivity Commission , the National Capital Region has the highest daily minimum wage rate at P645, while the lowest daily minimum wage is the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao at P316. “The window for the 19th Congress is slowly closing, which is why we need to speed up discussions and ensure the bill’s enactment before we adjourn,” Villanueva pointed out, adding, “With the high prices of goods, we need to ensure that our people can still afford to live decently,” he added in Filipino, highlighting the impact of rising costs on Filipino families.
