After 14 years in the House of Commons, six as a minister, the Montreal MP resigned last week. Here\u0027s some of what he told fellow MPs.

I know these things because, for most of my professional career, I was among those who had to implement the decisions made by my superiors. That responsibility falls on the shoulders of our public servants, and I believe they always do their best, even when too much is required of them. Let us be more aware that they must be given the time and resources they need before we demand that they implement the decisions we make.

Although I have tried to abstain as much as possible from partisanship, Hansard will no doubt deny this, having preserved the moments when I, too, failed in this regard, particularly at the beginning of my political career. That said, I honestly think I’ve improved over time. All this to tell my colleagues in the opposition that I enjoyed talking to them, even if I sometimes found myself on the losing side.

We all know that we are capable of behaving with dignity. We all know that we are capable of criticizing without shouting at the top of our lungs. We all know that we like to be heard and even listened to when we ask a question or when we give an answer.
