The Toronto Maple Leafs made a trade with Vancouver and put six players on waivers Sunday with rosters to be finalized by Monday evening.
The new general manager had to trade veteran all-purpose forward Sam Lafferty and, via waivers, might lose one or more of the first players he signed after taking over from Kyle Dubas in the spring.NHL rosters are to be set on Monday at 5 p.m. with Toronto opening Wednesday at home against Montreal. More creative trimming from Treliving and assistant Brandon Pridham is anticipated by late Monday.
The slight savings of taking Gregor at about $775,000 compared to Lafferty are important to the cap-crunched Leafs, even with Jake Muzzin, Matt Murray, Conor Timmins and possibly Bobby McMann headed for long-term injured reserve. Lafferty was one of the few NHLers to dress Saturday in Detroit, scoring a late goal in a 4-3 loss. He was included in Dubas’s big February trade with Chicago along with defenceman Jake McCabe as part of a larger package for a conditional first-round pick in 2025 and a second-rounder.
An upper-body bruising has held him to just four full periods of exhibition play and delayed a full rollout of assistant coach Guy Boucher’s new power play with the Swede as its swingman on the blue-line. But it’s as a vital new cog in the Eastern Conference’s best power play where he’s being put in the spotlight. He takes Morgan Rielly’s spot on the No. 1 unit with Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander, bringing a better shot and, as Marner noted the other day, greater length to reach for pucks or protect them.
