The Maple Leafs announced Monday morning that goaltender Matt Murray just underwent successful bilateral (double) hip surgery.

When Matt Murray is officially placed on long-term injured reserve by the Maple Leafs this week, it won’t be for a broken toenail.

The Maple Leafs announced Monday morning that the goaltender just underwent successful bilateral hip surgery and will be out a minimum of six to eight months.Murray, who was dogged by injuries the past couple of years with Ottawa and in 2022-23 in Toronto, had been headed to LTIR in the summer, though the club was not specific on the issue until Monday.

Murray’s salary for this season, $4,687,500 on the last year of his contract, was destined for cap relief. Defenceman Jake Muzzin’s contract of $5,625,500, is also LTIR-bound. The 29-year-old Murray appeared in just 26 games last season, with a record of 14-8-2 and a .903 save percentage. Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll are to be Toronto’s goaltending tandem to start the year as the team awaits any Monday afternoon waiver claim on Martin Jones. Toronto’s full roster ahead of Wednesday’s opener against Montreal is due with all NHL clubs at 5 p.m. ET on Monday.Postmedia is committed to maintaining a lively but civil forum for discussion and encourage all readers to share their views on our articles.
