It's a little late in the season for moral victories, but the MapleLeafs' effort in a loss to the Predators is something to build on (reporterchris)
finally showed that they’re capable of playing an air-tight, playoff-friendly game.has to be considered a step forward after a week where the goals against flowed like a burst damn.
That was soon followed by a goal from Wayne Simmonds — his first since arriving in Nashville from Philadelphia at the trade deadline — to end a stretch where the home team produced just three shots on Frederik Andersen in a 25-minute stretch. It was a much better performance for Toronto than the four games that came before it, when they gave up a ghastly 23 goals against.
The Simmonds goal came on a broken play while Brian Boyle’s opener started with a defensive zone turnover by Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin. He had time to clear but instead saw the puck go from Ryan Johansen to Craig Smith to Boyle and in at 4:47.The Leafs were at their best in the middle frame, with a decided edge in shots , shot attempts and scoring chances .
