While he has been busy behind the scenes dealing with the team's biggest stars — namelyAnd it looks more and more like the old team. The day began with a couple of: David Kämpf for four years at $2.4 million a year, and rookie Pontus Holmberg for two years at $800,000 a year.
Cowan wasn't rated as highly by others; he was anywhere from 34th to 102nd on various scouting lists. But the Knights, who produced Mitch Marner, are known for developing talent. The draft continues Tuesday, with the Leafs having just two picks, a fifth-rounder and a sixth-rounder. Though the draft is handy way to restock the prospects cupboard, the Leafs are more about the here and now than the future. And that’s why the Kämpf deal is interesting. The four-year, $9.6-million deal, with a cap hit of $2.4 million a season, is a significant raise from the two-year, $3-million deal the checking centre signed two years ago with Toronto.
