Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah has donated a $100,000 sponsorship he won for defending his teammate over a body-shaming tweet to a non-profit group that gives children the opportunity to participate in organized sport.
to a non-profit group that gives children the opportunity to participate in organized sport.
Dove Men+Care made the announcement Monday, saying that for the first time in the sports industry, it will offer athletes a sponsorship for their sportsmanship. “Manoah defended his fellow Toronto Blue Jay Alejandro Kirk from online bullying centred on his physique,” a company spokesperson said. Manoah was outspoken earlier this month when a Montreal sports radio host made light of a video of Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk hustling around the bases earlier this month, scoring from first base after an extra-base hit, calling it “embarrassing for the sport. Giving guys like this prominence feeds negative stereotypes.”
Manoah lashed out at the radio host, and tweeted out that he hoped that Kirk, who has caught all his starts this season except one, would inspire more interest in baseball and inclusivity in the sport.
