The clergy of the Archdiocese of Manila said the ease with which lawmakers responded to the call to re-impose death penalty in the country is “alarming.”In a statement dated August 4, the Manila clergy said while they agree that it is the duty of legislators to enact laws and State policies, they expressed their consternation to the lack of independence and imprudence of some of the lawmakers.
Death penalty, they said, is also “biased and unfair” even likening it to the dreaded war on drugs which victimizes mostly the poor. The Manila priests also cited the fallibility and imperfection of the country’s justice system as another reason why they reject capital punishment.
