Mandaue City in the Philippines has installed a 360-degree CCTV camera on the roof of Bai Hotel, dubbed the 'fire watcher,' to improve fire monitoring and response times.
A 360-degree closed-circuit television ( CCTV ) camera, nicknamed the “fire watcher,” has been installed on the rooftop of Bai Hotel in Mandaue City. This cutting-edge tool provides firefighters with a real-time view of the city to monitor and verify fire incidents. The initiative by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Mandaue City Fire Office aims to enhance fire suppression efforts across Mandaue City and neighboring areas, including Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City.
The camera was set up in early December, recognizing Bai Hotel as the tallest structure in the city. According to Supt. Arnel Abella of the Mandaue BFP, the camera’s 360-degree scope and zoom capability enable firefighters to identify fire locations even before public reports are received. The “fire watcher” is designed to detect signs of fire and verify fire alarms. Abella explains that the technology allows them to see in the footage if there is indeed smoke in the area if there is a call. He highlights the advantage over relying solely on manual reports, which can sometimes be inaccurate or even pranks. Abella noted that with the fire watcher, they can validate fire reports almost instantaneously. In cases of visible smoke, personnel can be dispatched immediately, potentially saving lives and minimizing property damage. This system also allows them to avoid unnecessary responses to prank calls. The camera also aids in reducing response times, as firefighters can mobilize even before receiving formal reports. Personnel will monitor the fire watcher 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This real-time monitoring, Abella added, provides the BFP with a significant advantage, especially during high-risk seasons. The project was funded by the local government of Mandaue City at a cost of approximately P300,000, drawn from a 20 percent allocation intended for the BFP
