Vincent Ward sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison for fatally shooting Vincent Bélanger-Dompierre
Vincent Ward of Labrador City was sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison for the manslaughter of Vincent Bélanger-Dompierre in 2018. - SaltWire Network fileST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Vincent’s Ward’s chosen toxic lifestyle led him to kill a former friend, a Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court judge ruled Friday, Feb. 3, sentencing Ward to 5 ½ years in prison and telling him that he has strong potential to become a productive member of society if he can stay away from drugs and alcohol.
Ward went to trial before a jury last fall on a charge of second-degree murder, but was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. According to an agreed statement of facts, Bélanger-Dompierre’s body was found at a Pine Avenue home in the early morning of April 26, 2018, along with drugs, money and guns. Bélanger-Dompierre was found to have had a toxic level of methamphetamine in his system, Faour said, and Ward had a lower level of the same drug.
“In summary, his current circumstances indicate positive prospects for his future,” Faour said of the report. “To say that the news of his death was a shock is an understatement,” Bélanger-Dompierre’s stepmother wrote. “As you all know, the death of a child, who moreover, had just turned 28, is a catastrophe of unspeakable sadness. Knowing that he was shot in the head by someone that he knew, while he was sitting in his living room, adds to our disbelief and anger.
