A rescue is unfolding at Porepunkah in Victoria’s alpine region as emergency crews work to free a pilot from his aircraft.

A man has been rescued from plane wreckage after a crash in Victoria’s alpine region.

The State Emergency Service said the Bright unit was alerted to the incident at 5am on Wednesday at Porepunkah, near Bright in the state’s northeast. The male pilot, believed to be the single occupant, was freed from the wreckage about midday on Wednesday, an SES spokesman said. The plane was found about 1 kilometre north of the airfield at Porepunkah and the pilot was transferred to an air ambulance, the spokesman confirmed.Ambulance Victoria was called to the scene of the crash about 11am and a specialist medical helicopter is on the scene.It is understood the plane took off from Porepunkah about 4.40am.
